Let's calculate the EMI for a practical loan scenario: Loan Details: • Principal (P) = ₹50,00,000 (50 lakh) • Annual Interest Rate = 7% • Loan Tenure = 20 years (240 months) Step 1: Convert annual rate to monthly rate r = 7 ÷ 12 ÷ 100 = 0.005833 Step 2: Apply the formula EMI = [50,00,000 × 0.005833 × (1.005833)^240] / [(1.005833)^240 − 1] Step 3: Calculate (1.005833)^240 (1.005833)^240 ≈ 3.3102 Step 4: Plug into formula EMI = [50,00,000 × 0.005833 × 3.3102] / [3.3102 − 1] EMI = [96,373.65] / [2.3102] EMI ≈ ₹41,714 So your monthly payment is approximately ₹41,714. Over 240 months, you'll pay 41,714 × 240 = ₹10,01,136 in total, meaning the total interest paid is ₹10,01,136 − ₹50,00,000 = ₹5,01,136.

What is the difference between EMI and simple interest?

EMI uses reducing-balance interest, where interest is calculated on the declining principal each month. Simple interest charges the same interest amount every month regardless of how much principal you've repaid. EMI is fairer and standard for all modern loans.

Can I reduce my EMI after taking a loan?

How does EMI change if interest rates drop?
