An EMI calculator helps you compute your monthly loan instalment (EMI) based on loan amount, interest rate, and tenure. Whether you're planning a home purchase, car loan, or personal borrowing, this tool shows exactly how much you'll pay each month and how much interest accumulates over the loan term.

What is the EMI Calculator?

EMI stands for Equated Monthly Instalment—a fixed amount you pay every month towards repaying a loan. Unlike irregular payments, EMI spreads the principal and interest evenly across the loan tenure, so you know precisely what's due each month. The EMI changes based on three factors: how much you borrow, the annual interest rate lenders charge, and how many months (or years) you have to repay.

How it works

The calculator multiplies your loan amount by a standard financial formula that accounts for the interest rate and time period. For each month, the formula allocates more of your early payments toward interest and more of your later payments toward principal reduction. By the final instalment, the balance reaches zero. The tool instantly splits your total repayment into monthly instalments and shows cumulative interest paid.

EMI = [P × r × (1 + r)^n] / [(1 + r)^n − 1]

P = principal loan amount, r = monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100), n = total number of monthly instalments (years × 12).

How to use the EMI Calculator

  1. Enter the loan principal amount (the money you borrow)
  2. Input the annual interest rate (check your loan agreement or compare lender offers)
  3. Select the loan tenure in years or months
  4. Click 'Calculate' to generate your EMI and full repayment schedule
  5. Review the monthly instalment, total interest, and payment breakdown by month
  6. Export or screenshot the amortization table for your records or to compare loan offers

Benefits

  • Instant clarity on monthly loan obligations—plan your budget with confidence
  • Compare multiple loan offers by adjusting rate and tenure to see which saves you money
  • Understand how much interest you'll actually pay over the loan life
  • Make an informed decision before applying for a loan
  • Track how much principal is repaid each month (early months are mostly interest)
  • Identify the impact of prepayment or early closure on total interest saved

Tips & common mistakes

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to convert annual interest rate to a monthly rate in manual calculations
  • Overlooking additional costs (processing fees, insurance, GST) that raise your true monthly burden
  • Assuming a lower rate than your actual offer and overspending based on false EMI figures
  • Not adjusting tenure—a shorter loan saves interest but demands a higher monthly payment

Tips

  • Use the EMI calculator before meeting a lender to set realistic budget expectations
  • Experiment with different tenures to find the sweet spot between affordable EMI and minimal interest
  • Check if your lender charges a processing fee or insurance premium on top of interest—add these to the true cost
  • If interest rates drop, refinance your loan to recalculate and potentially reduce your EMI or tenure

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between EMI and loan repayment?

EMI is your fixed monthly payment. Loan repayment includes the full process of paying back principal plus interest over time. Each EMI instalment is part of your total repayment schedule.

Can I pay more than my EMI each month?

Yes. Most lenders allow extra payments or prepayment without penalty. Paying more than the EMI reduces your principal faster, shrinking total interest paid and shortening the loan term.

Why is most of my early EMI payment going toward interest?

The EMI formula front-loads interest. As you pay down the principal, the interest portion of each instalment decreases and the principal portion grows, so later payments retire more of the original loan amount.

What happens if I miss an EMI payment?

Late payment penalties and additional interest charges apply. Your credit score also suffers, making future loans more expensive or difficult to obtain. Always prioritise EMI due dates.

How do I reduce my EMI?

Lower your EMI by extending the tenure (pay longer), negotiating a lower interest rate with your lender, or increasing your down payment so you borrow less principal.

Is the EMI calculator result exact?

The formula is accurate, but your actual EMI may vary slightly due to rounding, processing fees, or variable interest rates. Always confirm with your lender's official quote.
