An education loan calculator computes the monthly instalment (EMI) and total interest payable on student loans based on loan amount, interest rate, and loan tenure. It accounts for the grace period (common in student loans) and provides a complete amortisation schedule, helping students and parents understand affordability before committing to education debt.
The calculator applies the standard EMI formula to your loan parameters. You input the loan amount (principal), annual interest rate, loan tenure in years, and any grace period (typically 6–12 months post-graduation during which interest accrues but no payment is due). The tool calculates your fixed monthly payment, total interest charged over the life of the loan, and generates a month-by-month breakdown showing remaining balance.
EMI = P × [r(1+r)^n] / [(1+r)^n - 1]P is the loan principal (amount borrowed), r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100), and n is the total number of monthly payments (tenure in years × 12). The formula yields the fixed monthly instalment you'll pay for the entire loan period.
| Input | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Loan: ₹20,00,000 | Rate: 8.5% p.a. | Tenure: 10 years | Grace: 6 months | EMI: ₹24,440 | Total Interest: ₹10,92,800 | Total Repayment: ₹30,92,800 | After a 6-month grace period, repayment begins; during grace, accrued interest may be capitalised into the principal. |
| Loan: ₹10,00,000 | Rate: 7% p.a. | Tenure: 5 years | Grace: 0 months | EMI: ₹19,803 | Total Interest: ₹1,88,180 | Total Repayment: ₹11,88,180 | Shorter tenure and lower rate reduce both EMI and interest burden, ideal for smaller, domestically-funded degrees. |
| Loan: ₹35,00,000 | Rate: 9% p.a. | Tenure: 15 years | Grace: 12 months | EMI: ₹35,337 | Total Interest: ₹22,60,660 | Total Repayment: ₹57,60,660 | Longer tenure reduces monthly burden but increases total interest; common for foreign higher education loans. |
A grace period is a set duration (e.g. 6 months) after graduation when no payment is due, but interest accrues and is capitalised. A moratorium is a temporary pause during financial hardship; interest may still accrue. This calculator handles standard grace periods.
No, this calculator shows EMI based on principal and interest rate only. Check with your lender about loan protection insurance, processing fees, or GST, which will increase your total cost.
Yes, as long as you know the interest rate and tenure. Foreign education loans sometimes use variable rates or require a co-signer; enter the agreed fixed rate or estimated average rate.
This calculator assumes a fixed rate throughout. If your loan is floating-rate, recalculate with the new rate once it changes to update your EMI projection.
Extend your tenure (increases total interest), negotiate a lower rate, borrow less, or make a larger down-payment from your own funds. A combination is often best.
In India, up to ₹1,50,000 in education loan interest is deductible under Section 80E, regardless of income limit. This calculator shows gross interest; consult a tax advisor on net benefit.
