Body fat percentage represents the proportion of your total body weight that comes from fat tissue. Unlike BMI (which uses only height and weight), body fat percentage gives a more accurate picture of fitness and health status because muscle is denser than fat—two people at the same weight and height can have very different body compositions.
The calculator uses the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) formula, which combines your age, gender, BMI (calculated from height and weight), and waist circumference to estimate body fat percentage. It applies gender-specific equations because men and women typically store and distribute fat differently due to hormonal differences.
For men: Body Fat % = (1.20 × BMI) + (0.23 × Age) − 16.2
For women: Body Fat % = (1.20 × BMI) + (0.23 × Age) − 5.4BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The formula weights BMI (body proportions), age (metabolism changes with time), and applies gender-specific constants because women naturally have higher baseline body fat percentages than men at equivalent BMI and age.

For adults: Essential fat (5–13% for women, 2–5% for men), Athletes (14–20% women, 6–13% men), Fitness (21–32% women, 14–17% men), Average (33–39% women, 18–24% men). Your target depends on your goals and age.
The YMCA formula is conservative and can overestimate by 2–5% compared to DEXA scans. It relies only on waist circumference (not chest or hip) and doesn't account for muscle distribution. If you're very muscular, the estimate may be less accurate.
Once every 4–8 weeks if you're actively training or dieting. Frequent recalculation (weekly or daily) is misleading because body fat changes slowly and fluctuates due to water retention and hormones.
