The formula converts rim diameter from inches to millimetres (×25.4), then adds the sidewall height on both sides (width × aspect ÷ 100 is sidewall height in mm). Aspect ratio is the sidewall height as a percentage of width—a 55% aspect means sidewall = 55% of the tire's width. Circumference multiplied by revolutions per mile tells you how many complete tire rotations occur in one driven mile. Speedometer error is negative (reads slower) if the new tire is larger, because fewer rotations are needed to cover the same distance.
