An age calculator is a date-difference tool that determines how many complete years, months, and days have elapsed between a birth date and today. Unlike a simple year subtraction, it accounts for whether your birthday has occurred this year and adjusts for variable month lengths and leap years, giving you a precise chronological age.
The calculator takes your birth date and compares it to today's date, counting backwards: first it calculates complete years (subtracting your birth year from the current year, then checking if your birthday has passed), then counts remaining months, then remaining days. Leap years are factored in automatically so the tool handles February 29th correctly.
| Input | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Birth date: 15 March 1995, Today: 22 July 2026 | 31 years, 4 months, 7 days | The birthday passed this year (March is before July), so a full 31 years are complete; remaining 4 months and 7 days account for the time from March 15 to July 22. |
| Birth date: 22 December 2000, Today: 22 July 2026 | 25 years, 7 months, 0 days | Birthday hasn't occurred yet this year (December is after July), so only 25 complete years have passed; exactly 7 months remain until the next birthday. |
| Birth date: 29 February 2000 (leap year), Today: 22 July 2026 | 26 years, 5 months, 23 days | Leap year birthdays are handled correctly; the tool recognises 29 Feb and calculates age even on non-leap years. |
Age in just years rounds down and loses precision. Months and days matter for official records (passports, visas, medical histories) and age-gated eligibility (e.g., turning 18 in 3 months). This breakdown is the legally accepted way to state age.
Yes. The tool recognises leap-year births and calculates correctly. On non-leap years, your birthday is typically observed on 1 March, but the calculator handles both conventions depending on your location's rules.
Yes—enter their birth date instead of yours. The calculator works for anyone, living or historical, as long as the date is in the past.
Some versions of this tool let you set a custom 'as of' date. If yours doesn't, calculate the difference manually or use the years/months/days output and count backwards or forwards as needed.
This calculator runs locally in your browser and does not store, send, or log your data. Your birth date never leaves your device.
If your birthday hasn't happened yet this year, you're still that age until the date passes. For example, if born in December and it's July, you won't be a year older until December arrives.
