What is the Roofing Calculator?

Roof area is the total surface area of your roof, calculated from the building footprint and pitch. A pitch-adjusted multiplier accounts for the slope. One roofing square equals 100 square feet. Most shingle bundles cover about 33 square feet, so you need 3 bundles per square.

How it works

Enter your building length and width in feet. Enter your roof pitch as the rise per 12 inches (e.g., 6/12 means 6 inches of rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run). The calculator applies the pitch multiplier to your footprint area, then divides by 100 to get roofing squares and multiplies by 3 for shingle bundles.

Pitch Multiplier = sqrt(rise² + 144) / 12. Roof Area = Footprint × Pitch Multiplier. Roofing Squares = Roof Area / 100. Shingle Bundles = Roofing Squares × 3.

The pitch multiplier accounts for roof slope using the Pythagorean theorem. A 6/12 pitch multiplier is approximately 1.12. Multiply your footprint (length × width) by this multiplier to get the actual roof surface area. Divide by 100 to convert to roofing squares (a standard industry unit). Multiply squares by 3 to estimate shingle bundles needed.

Examples

InputResultNotes
Building 40 ft × 30 ft, pitch 6/12Roof area 1,344 sq ft, 13.44 squares, 40.32 bundlesMultiplier = sqrt(36 + 144) / 12 ≈ 1.118. Area = 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,341.6 sq ft
Building 50 ft × 40 ft, pitch 8/12Roof area 2,309 sq ft, 23.09 squares, 69.27 bundlesMultiplier = sqrt(64 + 144) / 12 ≈ 1.265. Area = 2,000 × 1.265 = 2,530 sq ft
Building 30 ft × 25 ft, pitch 4/12Roof area 758 sq ft, 7.58 squares, 22.74 bundlesMultiplier = sqrt(16 + 144) / 12 ≈ 1.054. Area = 750 × 1.054 = 790.5 sq ft

How to use the Roofing Calculator

  1. Measure or find the building length (in feet) and width (in feet) of your structure
  2. Determine your roof pitch, expressed as rise per 12 inches of run (e.g., 6/12, 8/12, 10/12)
  3. Enter the building dimensions and pitch into the calculator
  4. The calculator instantly displays roof area in square feet, roofing squares, and shingle bundles
  5. Use these numbers to order materials or plan your roofing project

Benefits

  • Instant material estimates — avoid over-ordering or running short on shingles
  • Accounts for roof pitch — steeper roofs have larger surface areas than their footprint suggests
  • Industry-standard units — uses roofing squares (100 sq ft each) familiar to contractors
  • Free and accurate — no sign-up or hidden calculations
  • Works for any pitch — from shallow 4/12 to steep 12/12 or higher

Tips & common mistakes

Common mistakes

  • Using roof pitch as a simple multiplier — the correct formula involves the Pythagorean theorem; a 6/12 pitch is not 1.5× the footprint
  • Forgetting to account for pitch — calculating roof area as footprint area alone will drastically underestimate material needs
  • Mixing up rise and run — pitch is always rise per 12 inches of run; do not reverse
  • Using roofing square as a weight or area per bundle — bundles cover about 33 sq ft, not 100; you need 3 bundles per square

Tips

  • Most residential roofs are 4/12 to 8/12 pitch; steep pitches (10/12+) require more material and are harder to work with
  • Steeper pitches look dramatic but increase your material and labor costs significantly
  • Always add 5–10% extra shingles for waste and future repairs; your calculator result is the minimum
  • Shingle bundles are heavy (40–80 lbs each); plan for delivery and storage before ordering

Frequently asked questions

What is roof pitch?

Roof pitch is the steepness of your roof, expressed as rise per 12 inches of horizontal run. A 6/12 pitch means 6 inches of rise for every 12 inches of horizontal distance. Steeper = higher number.

What is a roofing square?

One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof area. It is an industry-standard unit. Most shingle bundles cover about 33 sq ft, so you need 3 bundles per square.

How many shingles are in a bundle?

Most asphalt shingle bundles contain 20–30 shingles and cover about 33 square feet (roughly 1/3 of a roofing square). Three bundles cover one square (100 sq ft).

Does my roof pitch affect material needed?

Yes, significantly. A steeper pitch creates more surface area than a flat roof with the same footprint. A 12/12 pitch roof is about 1.41× the footprint area; a 4/12 pitch is about 1.05×.

Should I order extra shingles?

Yes, always order 5–10% extra for waste, cuts, and future repairs. If your calculator says 40 bundles, order 42–44 to be safe.

Can I use this for metal or tile roofing?

The roof area calculation applies to any roofing type. However, material ordering differs—metal is sold by square foot, tile by weight or piece count. Use our area result and adjust for your material type.
