Square Footage Calculator

Measure any rectangular space by entering length and width. Calculate square footage, area in other units, and optional total cost.

Square Footage

120.00sq ft

Square Metres11.15 sq m
Square Yards13.33 sq yd
Perimeter44.00 ft

Enter length and width in the same unit. The calculator converts to square metres, square yards, and optionally calculates total cost.

What is the Square Footage Calculator?

Square footage is the area of a space measured in square feet (sq ft). It represents the total amount of floor or surface area. For example, a room that is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide has 120 square feet. Square footage is essential for estimating material costs, planning renovations, and comparing property sizes.

How it works

Select your preferred unit (feet or metres). Enter the length and width of your space. Optionally enter the price per square foot to calculate total cost. The calculator instantly displays square footage, converts to other units, shows perimeter, and computes total cost if a price is provided.

Area = Length × Width. Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width). Total Cost = Area × Price per Square Foot.

Square footage is simply length multiplied by width when both are in feet. If measurements are in metres, the result is first converted to square feet. Perimeter adds all four sides (which is twice the sum of length and width). Total cost multiplies the area by the unit price.

Examples

InputResultNotes
Length 12 ft, width 10 ft120 sq ft (11.15 sq m, 13.33 sq yd)A = 12 × 10 = 120 sq ft; perimeter = 2(12 + 10) = 44 ft
Length 5 m, width 4 m at $50/sq ft2,152.78 sq ft, cost $107,6395 m × 4 m = 20 sq m = 215.28 sq ft; $50 × 215.28 = $10,764
Length 20 ft, width 15 ft300 sq ft (27.87 sq m, 33.33 sq yd)A = 20 × 15 = 300 sq ft; perimeter = 2(20 + 15) = 70 ft

How to use the Square Footage Calculator

  1. Choose your unit: feet or metres
  2. Enter the length of your space
  3. Enter the width of your space
  4. Optionally enter the price per square foot (e.g. for flooring or paint)
  5. View results: square footage, square metres, square yards, perimeter, and total cost
  6. Copy results or recalculate with different dimensions

Benefits

  • Instant conversion — calculate square footage and convert to metres and yards at once
  • Flexible units — work in feet or metres; results appear in all common units
  • Cost estimation — multiply square footage by material price to get instant project costs
  • Perimeter included — know the distance around your space for trim, fencing, or baseboards
  • Real-world accuracy — use for flooring, paint, landscaping, construction, and real estate

Tips & common mistakes

Common mistakes

  • Mixing units — if length is in feet, width must also be in feet; do not mix feet and metres
  • Using diameter instead of radius — for circular areas, measure the radius, not full width
  • Forgetting to convert units before multiplying — always ensure both dimensions are in the same unit first
  • Entering price per square metre but expecting square foot cost — check your unit when entering price

Tips

  • For L-shaped or irregular rooms, divide into rectangles and add the areas
  • Always measure twice to avoid mistakes; enter your dimensions slowly to prevent typos
  • If price is per square metre instead of per square foot, convert: divide the price by 10.764
  • Use decimal values for measurements like 12.5 ft or 3.25 m for greater precision

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between square feet and square metres?

1 square metre = 10.764 square feet. A square metre is larger. Use square metres for metric countries; use square feet in the US and UK.

Can I use decimal measurements?

Yes. Enter 12.5 ft or 3.75 m for precise measurements. The calculator handles decimals and fractions.

How do I calculate an L-shaped room?

Divide the L-shaped room into two rectangles. Calculate the area of each rectangle separately, then add them together.

What if my space is not rectangular?

For circular spaces, use the circle calculator (area = π × radius²). For triangular spaces, divide by 2 (area = base × height ÷ 2). For irregular shapes, break them into rectangles and triangles.

How does the price calculator work?

Enter your price per square foot (e.g. $5 per sq ft for flooring). Multiply square footage × price = total cost.

Is perimeter the same as square footage?

No. Square footage measures area (inside space). Perimeter measures distance around the edge. A 10×10 room has 100 sq ft area but 40 ft perimeter.
